Historic carriage on track for Underground anniversary
To celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Underground in 2013, London Transport Museum has restored Metropolitan Railway Jubilee Carriage No. 353, a four-wheeled first class carriage built in 1892.
Supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) and the London Transport Museum Friends, the carriage has been refurbished to full to working order in time for the 150th anniversary of the Underground in January 2013.
The work was undertaken by the Festiniog Railway, a specialist in heritage railway carriage restorations. Engineers and craftsmen completed to schedule the 16-month, £200,000 restoration project, in November 2012. Following the Underground anniversary celebrations the carriage will tour preserved railways in London and the South East.
A photographic diary and blog recording the restoration and subsequent use of the carriage can be accessed by cklicking on the Flickr and Wordpress logos below:![]()
